Just Another Breastfeeding Tale – A Mother’s Story

Today marks the beginning of World Breastfeeding Week 2012 and I would like to share with you this week, some of the stories of the mothers I know either in real life or through my connections online.  Breastfeeding is a bond that I share with these women and I would like to celebrate that.

This year’s theme is “Understanding the Past – Planning the Future” and today I share with you Michelle’s story.  I met Michelle through her mother-to-mother support group on Meetup.com.  I have come to enjoy and rely on the social interactions with the mothers in this group.  Michelle travels all over our corner of Connecticut and facilitates positive interaction between mothers regardless of their choices in parenting.  She is a Bradley Method Instructor with her husband, Erich and also a pre- and post-natal yoga instructor and the founder of LITTLEseeds Program that combines song and stretching for moms, babies and young children.

From Michelle’s story, Just Another Breastfeeding Tale:

I never meant to breastfeed each child over a year and, what’s more, for over three years each.  I never even thought about it very much until I weaned my son in a time out, knowing, with heart heavy, tears in my eyes, we were done.  That moment was filled with relief and yet anguish over closing the book forever on one of the most precious, reliable, loving exchanges we shared. Breastfeeding made everyone in my home feel safe and loved.  It was our first act of trust and met a need beyond nourishment.
